Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy for Women in Georgia
Are you searching for an alternative to traditional talk therapy? You may want to consider eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which Blue Couch Therapy offers for women in the greater Georgia area.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
When someone experiences a traumatic event, it’s common for certain sights, sounds, smells, or words to trigger memories of the trauma, which can cause the person to feel emotional distress. EMDR therapy helps patients resolve these previously unprocessed memories.
During an EMDR therapy session, the therapist prompts the patient to recall a traumatic event. While the patient discusses the trauma, the therapist guides them through a series of eye movements. Because the patient has to devote some of their attention to the eye movements, rather than focusing solely on the memory, it makes it easier for their brain to process the trauma and heal. Over time, this can help the memories feel less upsetting.
What Can EMDR Therapy Be Used to Treat?
Therapists use EMDR therapy to treat a wide array of conditions, including:
- Addiction
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorders
- Depression
- Dissociative disorders
- Eating disorders
- Grief
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic attacks
- Performance anxiety
- Personality disorders
- Phobias
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Sleep disturbances
- Substance abuse disorders
In some instances, EMDR therapy can also be used to treat medical issues such as chronic pain and illness.
